Back to making music again

A few weeks ago, I was just starting to assemble a set of demos for my next album. And then my computer died. I didn't lose any files, but it took me weeks to get back up and running again. Now, I'm taking stock of what I've got.

I've been recording demos and partially-finished tracks since 2004. Before that, I laid down synth and piano arrangements. The Solomon Project didn't happen until 2009, which means I have 5+ years of very decent arrangements that have never been properly produced.

So far, both of the albums I've recorded since I started singing have been comprised of both new and old material. Four songs on my first album were taken from a set of demos I recorded in 2008. The final track (an instrumental called "Bleed Dry") is actually something I wrote back in 2005. Most of the tracks on my second album, The Shivers, were recorded specifically for that project. "House of Cards" is one of the first guitar songs I ever wrote, but the version on the album is radically different from the demo. And all but one track on the companion EP, Just a Chill, are retoolings of older songs.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that every time I sit down to make a new album, I gather older demos and record new ones. Some of the new ones become old demos when they've been passed by a few times. Others are immediately recorded and released. But eventually, I get a set of songs I'm proud of, and I put it out.

I don't know when my new album will be ready, but I promise it's going to rock.
