Like a lot of guitarists, I learned to play using plastic (or celluloid) picks. They're cheap, readily-available, and pretty much the standard. But they also break a lot if you play forcefully.
Which I do.
Every time I order something music-related online (usually from Musician's Friend), I throw in $5-10 of picks or other random stuff. It's fun, and it gives me a chance to try out some new things.
A few years after I started playing, I noticed that there were a lot of metal picks available. That was different. I wanted to try it. I got a few steel ones, one with a wire for a tip, and one made of brass stamped from a cymbal blank. The latter was $5, and I was almost afraid to use it.
But it turned out to be the best pick I'd ever used. And durable as hell. 5 years later, and I'm still using it. It's barely worn. But the company apparently stopped making them. I have other brass picks, but I'll never have another Cymbolic.
I'm kinda bummed about that.
